About Jonathan Mooney

Jonathan Mooney is an award-winning writer, public speaker, and leading advocate for neurodiversity and inclusive education. Diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD at a young age, Mooney’s early academic journey was marked by isolation, shame, and the repeated message that he was broken. By the age of 12, he had still not learned to read and was told he would likely end up in jail or working a menial job. Instead, he went on to earn an honors degree in English Literature from Brown University, where he co-founded a nonprofit dedicated to empowering students with learning differences.

Mooney is the author of multiple books, including The Short Bus, Learning Outside the Lines, and Normal Sucks, which have been widely acclaimed for their wit, candor, and deep insight into the realities faced by students with disabilities. His work has been featured in outlets such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and NPR. A highly sought-after speaker, Mooney has shared his message across all 50 states and spoken to audiences at Google, Harvard, the Kennedy School of Government, and the United States Senate, among many others.

Throughout his career, Mooney has remained steadfast in his belief that the problem is not the student, but the system—and that our definition of intelligence must expand to reflect the full spectrum of human potential. His life’s work is dedicated to building a more inclusive and empowering future for individuals who think differently.

Jonathan lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three sons and continues to be a passionate voice for transforming education, dismantling stigma, and celebrating the power of diverse minds.
